question. give 10 points?
Say: I put Na in H2O then i get NaOH, why don’t i get NaO + H2???
How can lye (NaOH), be anhydrous??? To form NaOH, it is necessary to mix Na with H2O, how can lye be a white powder???
If i have lye (anhydrous NaOH), can i get Na??? Any procedure????
> Say: I put Na in H2O then i get NaOH, why don’t i get NaO + H2???
The Oxygen can form another bond. Technically NaO is an ion. It has a single negative charge. It will react as a base with any Hydrogen ions in the environment.
NaO(-) + H(+) -> NaOH
The Oxygen now has a pair of positive ions and the charge is balanced.

NaOH is anhydrous. It decomposes water into lye and Hydrogen gas. It is also extremely deliquescent. This means lye attracts water molecules. It will even take water out of the air. Pure crystaline NaOH does not contain any water molecules, though. Copper sulfate does however. The formula is CuSO4.5H2O. This is the blue, crystalline form. If heated, steam is driven off and a white powder remains. This is anhydrous Copper sulfate, CuSO4.

If you want Sodium metal, start with salt, not lye. Heating lye just forms an oxide. If ordinary salt is melted and exposed to direct current, it will decompose into Sodium metal and Chlorine gas. The Sodium will form at the negative terminal and the Chlorine will form at the positive terminal. This in fact was how the metal was first discovered by H. Davies.
FYI: Lye is manufactured by evaporating seawtaer into brine and then passing electric current through it. The products are Lye, Hydrogen and Chlorine gas.
2H2O + 2NaCl -> 2NaOH + Cl2 + 2H2
Sodium metal reacts with water to form Lye and Hydrogen gas.
2Na + 2H2O -> 2NaOH + H2
Lye will eventually decompose into Sodium bicarbonate by reacting with CO2 in the atmosphere.
NaOH + CO2 -> NaHCO3
