How do people get the white base on their fingernails? (half-moons)?
I see a lot of people like that, but I also some people who don’t, including my friends. I read it’s because you lack calcium, and then I read it’s because you have a good amount of calcium. I drink a lot of milk. But I don’t have those half-moons. So is it just genetic? I don’t mind not having them but I was just curious. Sometimes I get white little spots on my nails, but no white bases.
That little half moon you see is called the lunula or matrix, and it’s part of where your actual fingernail originates. It’s the leading edge of the germinal matrix, or nail root, which is extending back past your cuticle into the finger several millimeters. It’s got nothing to do with calcium or anything else, whether you see it or not is strictly genetic. The white moon consists of nail cells that are not fully mature, which is why they look different. The lunula varies in size from finger to finger, being more commonly seen on thumbs than other fingers, and can disappear as you age. The white spots you see on the fingernails themselves are a sort of fingernail bruise. When the nail was not fully keratinized or hardened, and still forming, it had a blow to the spot that cause a minor bit of separation. They are called leukonychia, in case you want to know. They don’t show up right away, and by the time they do, you have most likely forgotten hitting your hand and doing the damage. It wasn’t such a bad injury that it would stick out in your mind, but your nail noticed. Of course, some spots can be related to vitamin deficiency, but not calcium. If you had a vitamin deficiency sufficient to cause the spots on your nails, other things would have long before sent you to see your doctor. Things like hair loss and skin problems would cause you to have already seen the doctor. The other thing which can cause white spots, rarely- is a fungal infection of the nail. Again though, you would have other problems that would have told you there was trouble already. What you have are most likely normal nails with a few of the white spots due to nail bruises. None of that is a big deal. And now you know a lot more about your fingernails than you suspected.
