Beatriz claims that she can snuff out a candle without touching or breathing on it. She cuts off the bottom of a plastic soda bottle, pulls a plastic bag taut over the bottom and secures it with a rubber band. She then holds the open, pouring end of the bottle about 1 inch from a burning candle and proceeds to hit the plastic bag sharply, producing a noise. As she promised the flame goes out. Why?
Because when she hits the plastic bag at the bottom of the bottle, air is being forced up the bottle, and out the nozzle. This is basically the same principle as ‘blowing’ the candle out. While she is not physically blowing it out, she is using air to blow it out.
