Tips For Making Soy Candles
Making candles at home is a fun and satisfying hobby to learn. There are many different types of candles to make such as mason jar candles, pillar candles, candles from beeswax or soy just to name a few.
Lots of folks have learned how to make soy candles at home, and the following are some ideas to get you started on the right track.
First of all, you’ll need to have all of your supplies ready and easy to get to in a safe environment away from pets and children. Then, choose the type or size of soy candle you will create. If you’re a beginner, then a good suggestion is to start with a little candle like a votive.
For a nice votive soy candle, you’ll need about two ounces of soy wax for each votive. Make sure to measure as exactly as possible, so eight votive candles will require one pound of wax.
It’s time to melt the soy wax. At this point, something to melt wax in is required. You can use a double boiler, but a wax melter will make the melting process go faster and keep you from causing a fire from wax spill on your stove.
By adding color and fragrance you’ll create a very desirable candle. Craft stores both online and locally carry soy candle dye. Put the color into the melted wax. If you chose to make a scented candle, add around one ounce of fragrance for every pound of soy wax. Add the scent when the wax has heated to one hundred seventy degrees so the fragrance binds to the soy, stir well for two minutes.
Once your soy wax is melted and any color or scents are added, you’ll need to reduce the heat to one hundred fifty degrees and get your molds ready for pouring into by heating them a little. Once the wax has cooled, pour it into the molds. Use either a pouring pot or a measuring cup with a pouring spout. Add your wicks when you see the wax start to harden somewhat. Put the wick in straight and to the bottom of the candle mold making sure it’s in the middle of the mold.
Now that you’ve made your soy candle, let the wax set for about five or six hours for it to be ready to trim the wick to your desired length.
