Candle Making Equipment & Supplies – The Essentials
Candle making is a wonderful activity that can be easy and fun. You can do it with yours kids as a home project or you can make homemade gifts for family and friends. Better yet, candle making businesses are a growing industry and an easy way for you to earn extra cash.
There are just a few supplies that are needed to start making candles at home. These supplies should include: candle wicks, candle wax, candle molds, and candle fragrance.
Candle molds will be the first thing that you will need. Most craft stores will have as candle making wax and supplies area and you will generally find molds in this section. There are a variety of shapes and sizes. When selecting a mold find one that reflects your design style or a style that someone you know will enjoy.
After selecting your molds the next candle making items you will need are your candle wax, wicks, and fragrance.
There are a variety of types and colors of candle wax. Beeswax is sometimes preferred and it can be found in the candle making section of your craft store. Various colors of wax can be purchased if you wish to make multicolored candles. Wax is packaged in pellets or cubes and is melted and poured into the molds.
A do-it-yourself candle making kit is another option if you are not sure of what candle making supplies you will need. This kit will include everything you need to make the candles including candle making wax, fragrance, color, and the candle mold.
There are a number of essential tools that are required to be successful at making your own candles. Other than the basic supplies which included above, the following essential items will be required:
• Double Boiler – essential for melting candle wax. Wax goes in the inner container, water in the outer container.
• Heating Element – to melt the wax. A stove or hot plate will suffice.
• Hammer and Screwdriver – to break apart large chunks of wax.
• Large Plastic Trash Bag – prevent scattering chips while breaking wax.
• Kitchen or Postal scale (digital recommended) – to weigh ingredients on special projects
• Measuring Cups – to measure liquid ingredients.
• Measuring Spoons – to mix dyes and scents in melted wax. Use separate spoons for each dye color.
• Candle Thermometer – Gauge temperature of melting wax.
• Containers – contain soft waxes while burning.
• Mold Release – coat inside of molds for easy candle removal.
• Mold Sealer – secure wick and seal wick holes in molds.
• Paper Towels – help with general cleanup as you make the candles and when you’ve completed each project.
• Paring Knife – cut soft cold wax and trim candles.
• Craft Scissors – trim soft candle wax and wicks.
• Pencils – hold wicks in place while creating candles.
• Tape Measure – measure candles and wick dimensions.
Although the equipment list may seem quite extensive, most of the above items can be found around your own home. Newness or quality is not a factor as long as the items are serviceable and safe to use.
Maximum diligence should be practiced when working with hot wax. Wearing an apron over your clothes might be a good idea.
