Orchid Information

One of the most favored house plants are the orchids. The number of orchid species are vast, and there are even more cultivated hybrids. They are not difficult to grow with the proper amount of care including water, light, fertilizer and air.  While many species of orchids do enjoy cooler conditions, several species do very well in temperatures that are around 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

One of the easiest orchids to grow is the Phalaenopsis orchid plant.Because this orchid can live well indoors, it is most often seen in homes or offices. The lifespan of orchid flowers vary by species. The bud of the Phalaenopsis rarely opens up, but when it does, it blooms for two to three months.Where as, the flowers on a Cattleyas orchid plant may last up to a month in bloom from the time that the bud opens. Some species of orchids will bloom once a year, while other species will bloom several times a year and some even bloom continuously.

One more thing that keeps orchids popular to many is its scent. Some orchids are wonderfully fragrant. However, orchid fragrances vary greatly, depending on their species. Some only emit subtle scents, while there are others that have extremely powerful fragrances. The fragrance of orchid flowers range from the scent of blooms to fruit scentsInterestingly, there are orchids that smell like familiar scents such as chocolate, lilac, coconut, etc.

Orchids should be planted in bark rather than typical potting soil. They can also be grown in New Zealand sphagnum moss. For orchids to thrive well, they need to be grown in pots where proper drainage is available.Traditional methods of soil potting is not ideal for orchid plants because it cuts off air and blocks water drainage. They should also be watered about once or twice a week.In the summer season, your orchid may require watering for every four to five days.A good rule of thumb to follow is the more heat, the more water you should give your orchid. The less heat, the less amount of needed water. If your orchid is potted in New Zealand sphagnum moss, there is lesser need to water it compared to barked orchids. These plants can need watering only once every ten days.

Orchids have different lighting needs, although most species prefer only mild lighting. It is best to position your orchids on a window facing east. The good thing about orchids is they are capable to thrive in shade and under the sun because of their tropical origins.Sun exposure that is too strong.A sign that your orchid is suffering from overexposure to sunlight is when its leaves are turning yellow. If that happens, relocate your orchid to a place with more shade.Yellowing of orchid leaves may also indicate insufficient feeding.  Orchids need to be regularly fertilized every two weeks to keep them in good condition. If your moss or bark is dry, water should also be applied prior to applying the fertilizer solution to the orchid.
