What are the benefits of having a CT brain scan with dye vs. without dye?
My doctor has ordered me a CT scan of my brain without dye. My doc said I may have brain damage from hitting my head really hard multiple times (I had a concussion), but it happened 3 months ago, will it still show up? How will they be able to tell? And will they look for other things like stroke or aneurysms as well?
For a couple of months I have been having sharp pain in my head that was concentrated in my forehead on the right side only, then the pain moved to the left side and was still sharp and concentrated, but a little broader. Since my accident my procrastination has gotten really bad. I stare off into space and my short-term memory is pretty has gotten bad.
Contrast dye for CT and MRIs is injected into your blood vessels (or can be taken orally). Therefore, if you have a brain CT with contrast, your blood vessels in your head would light up and be really easy for the doctor to see. Since you had a concussion, the doctor might have ordered a CT w/o dye because they want to look at other elements, like the structure of your brain tissue.
Dye is not great for your body. It can damage your kidneys, and in patients with kidney failure, they can’t handle dye. So it’s best not to use it if you don’t have to.
If you are still experiencing symptoms, then the potential brain damage may still show up. Neuroradiologists train for five years after medical school and internship, so let’s hope they can find what they’re looking for! Good luck.
