BRAZILIAN WAX – GIVING NEW MEANING TO WOOD CARE
Wooden furniture is an asset to every home – whether it’s a much-loved antique that’s been in the family for generations, a simple pine desk, an ornate carved masterpiece from Indonesia, a sleek Scandinavian work of art or a chunky outdoor suite. Wooden furniture is so versatile – it comes in so many different shapes and forms, but all with one thing in common. A bit of TLC is what they need.
If wooden furniture is properly cared for and maintained, it will retain its value and its good looks and it will remain functional for a long time. Although the fashions of wooden furniture and wood treatments may have changed over the years, the method of caring for it hasn’t – and all it needs is a coating of furniture polish and a regular buffing. That may sound a bit like elbow grease, but there’s no doubt that a little care will pay huge dividends.
Many people fall into the trap of believing that a quick dusting and the odd squirt from a shop-bought furniture spray is sufficient. Whilst it does bring a richer look to wooden surfaces, it doesn’t do anything to change the actual condition of the wood or provide any sort of protection. In reality, sprays can be harmful over the long term.
The solutions for perfect furniture care comes from nature. Wax polish, made from beeswax or the carnauba tree which originated in Brazil, is the magic ‘food’ for wood. Wax polishing can bring old and tired finishes back to life, it can safeguard wood from future damage and it can bring out the gorgeous patina. Wax can also be used to fill up tiny cracks and blemishes on wooden surfaces.
When you treat wooden furniture with polishes and beeswax polishes, it’s the same principle as if you were waxing your car. It protects the wood or leather, repels dust, grit, dirt and debris and gives a shiny, clean and glowing quality to the piece.
Some quick and easy notes on caring for wooden furniture :
· Firstly, remove all dust and debris using a soft cloth
· Using a soft lint-free cloth or 0000 grade steel wool, apply natural wax sparingly to small areas at a time using a circular motion or with the grain of the wood.
· Let wax stay on for 10 – 15 minutes
· Buff using a soft cloth
· Repeat process at least twice
· Wax polish can be applied on woods that have been finished with shellacs (eg antique furniture that has been French-polished), woods that have been varnished or oiled.
· Try and repeat the waxing process every six months.
There are many varieties of furniture oil and polishes on the market, but regardless of the wood finishes of your furniture, it’s always recommended to purchase natural products from a reputable supplier or antique dealer. Pigments are also added to some furniture polishes which can bring out the colour of the different woods. Furniture will become shinier as more layers of wax are added.
Waxing and polishing furniture isn’t difficult, but it is a learned skill and the more one does it, the easier it will become. The effort will be richly rewarded however, and furniture that is properly cared for and polished will always look good and last for longer.
