How To Reduce Your Energy Bills By Blocking Air Gaps In The Home
With the rise in energy costs it pays to make sure that your home does not have any holes or gaps within its structure where air can link out especially, when you’re paying a lot of money to either heat or cool your house.
The following guidelines will help you identify where there are possible leaks for you to address:
Windows and frames
Windows can be a major source of air leaks and heat loss. The most common place to find cracks is the joint between the frame and the wall. To test for leaking air moisten the tip of your index finger and move it slowly and closely along the surface of the joint. If you feel a sense of coldness on your finger then, you have a leak. If the crack is quite small the finger test may not detect a leak therefore, use a lighted candle and see if the flame flickers.
Depending on the type of window you have, you may have to replace the water resistant seal as this tends to erode over time. Another effective method to make the window air and water tight is to apply silicone sealant along the joint of the frame. This is very effective at preventing the heat escaping and stopping the cold air getting in.
Doors and frames
This applies more to external than internal doors. The foundation of most houses are built into the ground which can create structural movements over time. These movements can affect wooden structures such as door frames by moving them out of shape which can lead to air gaps.
If you have a door frame that has an air gap then you may need to remove the inside door casing. If this is the case then gently use either a hammer or crow bar to do this and be careful to avoid damaging the wood. If you are not sure what the wood strip is you can recognise it as the wood trim that conceals the joint between the wall and the frame of the door. When you have carefully removed the casing insert the new weather seal along the edge of where the door closes against the frame.
When you have finished applying the weather seal you can reattach the wooden frame casing to the door frame. To ensure all gaps are sealed apply a silicone sealant along the joint to make it airtight.
If you follow these procedures for every window and door in the house then you will be safe in the knowledge that you have an air tight house that will help you save money on your energy bills.
