Why You Should Be Aware Of Online Fraud On Your Online Dating Site

Online dating is an extremely popular medium in the UK and all over the World. While on the most part, they’re a fantastic place to meet a potential partner and have helped numerous couples get together, they’re also a place for scammers to target vulnerable victims.

Whilst the majority of sites put a lot of effort into removing scammers from their sites, it’s an extremely tough job and would be very difficult for the sites to establish who’s genuine and who’s fraudulent.

Because of this, it’s more important than ever before to be aware of these scams. To help with that, here are the two most common scams you’ll find on UK dating websites:

African Emergency Scam
This is the one that comes up most frequently in online dating site fraud and is one you should be aware of. Scammers will pretend to be from America, the UK or Australia and will chat with someone for a long period of time, sometimes months on end, in order to form a bond with them and let the victim feel as though they’re properly getting to know each other. After the fraudster has gained the trust of the other person, they fabricate a story whereby they need money for some business, personal or family emergency (usually in an African country), asking the victim to help with the money. Common so-called emergencies include medical expenses, business funds or travel. The fabricated story will be designed to make you feel like no-one else can help, and will usually tug at your heart strings, making you feel guilty if you don’t help. But make no mistake, if you send them the money, that’s the last you’ll ever see of it.

Travel Expenses Scam
The second most-common scam on dating sites, this one is often targeted at men seeking women. The scam involves a con-artist, usually from another country, chatting to a victim for months in order to gain their trust. They will then decide that they want to travel to the UK in order to visit the person they’ve been talking to.
The simplest version of this scam involves the scammer simply asking for money to help pay for the plane ticket to come and visit the victim in the UK; then once the money is sent, the victim never sees or hears from the other person again.

There are several other scams that are run through online dating websites, but these two are the most common and the are the ones you’ll most likely come across. If you do use online dating sites, make sure you’re vigilant to this kind of fraud.
