I have a question about making essential oils and using flowers?
Hi!
I made a bottle of essential oil using vegetable oil (100 percent, pure) and used pansy flowers with it’s leaves and stems, and blueberry leaves with it. Right now i’m waiting for it to strengthen.
I was wondering, can I use other things besides flowers as long as it is clean and free of any fungus and bugs? I want to use maby bark from a branch or moss.
Can I add any spices or natural fruits from a tea bag in it?
Or other oils?
First of all, what you have made is not an “essential oil” as essential oils are produced through distillation or expression only and should contain nothing that wasn’t in the particular plant originally.
What you have produced is in fact an infused or macerated oil. Infused oils can be very useful and unlike essential oils they do not have to be further diluted in order to be used on the skin. They can also be made from plants from which it is not possible to distill an essential oil.
You can try making infused oils from any natural, fragrant plant source. However bear in mind that some plant material is quite hard and may need to be broken up in order for the infusion to work, eg woods, bark, resin, some spices etc. Also some plants can be irritant, so do a patch test before using your creations on the skin.
Have fun and experiment – you never know what wonderful new fragrance you might end up with!
