Will mold in a humidifier make your baby sick?
My baby has ben sick since Sunday – (6 days). She has a fever, cough, sore throat and the Doctor told us it was a viral infection. I noticed today as I was emptying her humidifier that there was some mold. Can this be why she is sick? I am nervous that maybe we should be doing something else besides giving her the antibiotics prescribed by the doctor.
The mold spores certainly wouldn’t be helping matters. If you run the humidifier full time, you should be sanitizing it at least every other day- if not at least emptying it and washing it out every single day. If you found mold in the water reservoir, there is also probably mold spores throughout the room now. You will need to clean that room very well to get rid of them. The carpets, drapes, pillows, bedding, – all that need cleaning. They do make sprays now that will kill and control allergens as well- but do launder what you can first. The viral infection is probably not the result of the mold, those are two different things- but the mold will not help matters either. Babies are more sensitive to things like virus, molds, bacterias, because they have learner immune systems. If she is a crawly, the floors and carpets especially have to be kept clean as you can. Her toys also need to be wiped down with a bleach solution or other disinfectant at least every few days- as what baby grabs usually goes right to the mouth, along with whatever it picked up. The viral illness is more frightening for the parents than it is dangerous to the child-and you can’t prevent them all, but you can cut down on the exposures a fair amount. Just stick with your antibiotics, and clean like a nutter. Viral infections usually last 1-2 weeks for little ones, and you should be seeing things start to get better here before long. If you can clean to remove most of the allergens, it may happen a bit faster, as her little body won’t be under attack from anything else.
