Put Your Microwave To Work For Dinner
Preparing dinner is one of the most time consuming chores most people face. After a long day, the last thing you may want to do is face a hot oven. Sometimes, you may forget that your microwave can do a lot more than warm leftovers. It is easy to prepare a complete meal quickly and save clean up time as well.
Before you start cooking, make sure that your countertop microwave is clean. Food that is cooked uncovered can splatter, leaving unappetizing bits of food stuck to the roof and sides. Steam from new foods can loosen these, which can then fall into what you are cooking. Take the time to wipe these away and to clean the carousel so that you do not have food cooked on.
Consider making your meat dish in the microwave. You can often prepare and serve in the same dish, which eliminates the need to clean a pan. One quick meal idea is to cook a meat loaf in a microwavable bundt cake pan. It will cook faster than in a loaf pan and will also be more decorative. The time required will depend on how thick your mixture is and the wattage of your microwave.
You may heat canned vegetables in the same bowl you place on the table. The hard, molded plastic microwave bowls are perfect for this. Most styles have lids so that you can cover and store leftovers without having to transfer to another container. Just empty the can, add any seasonings you desire, cover, and microwave until hot.
Baked potatoes are a special treat and are very easy to prepare in a microwave. Wash the potatoes thoroughly, then poke holes all around them with a fork or knife. Place on a microwave safe cake pan or plate and cook until soft. Cooking time will depend on the size of the potatoes, how many you cook at one time, and the power of your microwave. In general, you can bake them in about fifteen or twenty minutes.
You can make instant potatoes in a microwave and eliminate the need to clean a pan. Use a microwavable bowl with a handle. Add milk, water, margarine, salt and pepper according to the measurements provided on the box. Microwave until hot and carefully remove the bowl. Place it on a trivet and stir in the potato flakes. Blend well, either by hand or with an electric hand mixer. Once the bowl has cooled sufficiently, it can go directly to the table.
Many foods can burst or splatter in the microwave, so cover anything you think might do so. Exercise extreme caution when removing items, using an oven mitt or pot holder. Keep your face and hands well clear of anything that has just been taken from a microwave. Some ingredients may continue to pop or splatter for a few seconds after the cooking stops.
