It would be easier if a wood building like your home needed no more than basic house repair maintenance. Just scrape and caulk a bit, lay down some painting drop cloths, and roll on some layers of outdoor acrylic paint.
It is never that easy. Rather than easy, you may need to repair the wooden surface of the house.
My roughly twenty-five year old home required quite a bit of work. The steel sheeting of my original roof was badly done and allowed rainwater to soak the wood behind the eve. Over time, these facing boards shrunk and caved in the painted surface.
This repair I wanted to do on my own. I was worried whether wood putty could fill in the gaps properly.
My buddy next door repaired his wooden home many weekends to control termite infestations. These jobs looked good years later. He knew something I did not.

I had used Bondo on a car repair. Bondo did not shrink. Bondo could be planed. When he suggested doing this, It was obvious that it would do the job.
With auto filler, the method is to do the job in layers with thick layers at the outset and then thinner layers at the end. Furthermore, you can form shapes with molds, combining molding boards and regular kitchen wax paper. When sanding and finishing prior to painting all you need to do is to use one of the belt sanders to make the Bondo blend smoothly with the wood.
For those of you who own an old wood deck, consider the fact that you could also apply Bondo to fix splits in the flooring of wood decks of various types. It is useful, when you are waterproofing an old redwood deck.
Note the fact that Bondo finishes with a reddish hew and this will show through, if you only use a light colored water sealant on your wood deck. When you desire to waterproof your wood deck after patching with Bondo, you might need to use an opaque sealant.
Finally you don’t have to look for an automotive store for Bondo. It is easy to find Bondo at Home Depot or Lowes. By the way, my wood repair shows no signs of deterioration after many years.
