How do I calculate the caloric value in kcal/g of a 0.90g sample of vegetable oil?
A 0.90 g sample of vegetable oil is placed in a calorimeter. When the sample is burned, 25.9 kJ are given off. What is the caloric value in kcal/g of the oil?
(1) Divide heat released by mass of the sample and (2) convert kJ to kcal:
(1) 25.9 kJ / 0.90 g = 28.8 kJ/g
(2) 28.8 kJ/g / 4.184 kJ/kcal = 6.88 kcal/g
