Is it safe to burn a scented candle in the same room with my parakeets?

Yes, if you are careful to use the right type of candle. It isn’t usually the scent that is the problem. The toxins that can be deadly come from the petroleum-based paraffin wax and the metal core wicks that are used in many candles. Lead core wicks have been outlawed in the US, but some may still sneak through on candles that are imported. Zinc core wicks are perfectly legal and used in many candles, but can be toxic to birds.
You should be able to safely burn candles around your birds if you use candles that are made with natural vegetable waxes and 100% cotton wicks. Mia Bella candles are one brand that has been reported by bird owners to be safe. There are probably several other brands, too.
