Protein Supplements: A Post-Gastric Bypass Surgery Necessity
There are more people who are either severely overweight or clinically obese than ever before. The number currently stands at around 34 million in this country. Out of those, there are approximately 20 million who are in the process of dieting, whether starting one, ending one or still in the middle of trying to follow one. Some of them will have to turn to gastric bypass surgery, a procedure that has become the best option for many, one of the most common types of surgery to be performed in the United States today. Gastric bypass surgery and similar bariatric surgeries were strictly elective in the past. Now it has become recognized as a needed and vital procedure for many who suffer from obesity. The problems associated with weight gain are many, including higher instances of: – Heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases – Gall bladder disorders – Diabetes – Arthritis – High blood pressure, which can also contribute to heart and kidney disease – Breast cancer, endometrial cancer and several other varieties of cancer Type II diabetes, once known as adult onset diabetes, is occurring in more and more children today. Many related health problems that used to be thought of as occurring largely in adults, such as heart disease and even heart attacks, are happening to younger and younger people. Reasons such as these are why gastric bypass surgery is such a necessity for so many. Gastric bypass surgery can cost a great deal of money, anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000, but insurance will often cover this surgery. Types of Bariatric Surgery There are a number of procedures that fall under the umbrella of weight loss surgery. Some are even reversible. Others are adjustable or only temporary. The majority of these surgeries, however, are permanent. Like all procedures of its type, bariatric surgery should be considered potentially life-threatening. Be absolutely certain that you understand all the risks thoroughly before taking this option. The most common type of this surgery is called the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which literally reduces the size of the stomach. The stomach is stapled to create a small pouch, which is connected to a portion of the small intestine known as the jejunum. This is usually performed as an open procedure, though it is sometimes done instead as a laparoscopic procedure. The lapband procedure involves attaching an adjustable band, made of silicone, around the top portion of the stomach. This reduces the feeling of hunger in the patient and allows him to become full more quickly. This is an adjustable procedure – the lapband can be altered as the patient loses weight. If not adjusted, the lapband may slip out of place or become ineffective. During the first year and a half after lapband surgery, there should be around six to eight adjustments. A lapband procedure using laparoscopic surgery allows the patient to return home the day of the surgery. The procedure itself takes only about an hour. A sleeve gastrectomy is performed as a preliminary procedure upon those who are deemed to be too obese to safely undergo other surgeries. A surgeon will remove most of the stomach in these instances, leaving only about fifteen percent behind. This is completely irreversible but can later be modified into a more traditional bypass. There are some surgeons that feel this is a better procedure than the lapband, since there is no foreign device inserted into the body that can cause post-surgery complications. One type of bariatric surgery uses an endoscopic technique to completely bypass the stomach. A plastic tube is used to connect the throat to the small intestine or the stomach wall and is stitched to form a very small tube from the esophagus to the duodenum. The Necessity of Supplements and Nutrition Once the surgery is over, you will have to develop entirely new eating habits because your stomach will have a drastically smaller capacity. Every bit of food that you eat will have to count so you can maintain your health. Not only that, but recovery from surgery requires special care. You will need to increase your intake of protein, vitamins and minerals with a decreased capacity for the intake of food. It is vitally important that you learn to eat the right way so you can recover quickly and become the healthy person you wish to be. A proper diet will also help you to lose that weight you were trying so hard to lose before, only more efficiently. Weight loss after bariatric bypass surgery will be rapid. Depending upon the type of surgery, you could lose all of your excess weight in one to four years. You will eat less and learn new habits, such as: – Eating very slowly, chewing everything completely or only eating foods that have been blended. – Taking no liquids with meals – drinking is done either thirty minutes before or thirty minutes after every meal. – These same restrictions apply to supplements, medications and vitamins. Instead of three meals per day, you will have to eat every few hours to keep your metabolism and energy at an optimal level. Every meal should have protein, while any carbohydrates should be taken early in the day. To get the best results in terms of nutrition, take proteins that can be consumed quickly.
